Prior to joining Temasek, Lin Hong was the EVP of Transpac Capital Pte Ltd, from 1990 to 2000. Transpac was established in 1986 (then known as Transtech) and grew to become one of the largest venture capital firms in South-East Asia, managing more than US$820 million of funds in 2000, which were invested in a broad range of companies in Asia and USA. Prior to Transpac, Lin Hong was the CEO of U.S. subsidiaries manufacturing disk drives in Singapore, from 1981 to 1990. This included starting up from scratch, Computer Memories Far East Ltd in 1983, which was sold to Micropolis Ltd for about US$30 million in 1986, resulting in a significant capital gain for the owners of Computer Memories.

 

Lin Hong and his management team restarted under Micropolis in 1986 and grew the Singapore operations to achieve an annualized revenue run rate of US$400 million at the time of his departure in 1990. Lin Hong started work in 1970 in the Singapore Economic Development Board, heading the electronics group, where he spent eleven years promoting the development of the electronics industry in Singapore, which is now one of the largest industrial sectors in the economy. 

 

Lin Hong has a honours degree in electrical engineering and a diploma in business administration. He has served on the boards of private and listed companies in Singapore and USA. He also served 20 years (1981-2001) on the Board of Governors of the Institute of Technical Education (www.ite.edu.sg) Singapore; was Chairman of the Board of ITE Education Services (2003-2018); served 18 years (1992-2000) on the Board of Governors of Nanyang Polytechnic (www.nyp.edu.sg) Singapore; and served on various government committees. He was awarded a Singapore Public Service Medal in 1992, a Distinguished Friend of ITE award in 2012 and a Friend of NYP award in 2014.

 

Lin Hong has offered venture capital and private equity consultancy and management consultancy services under his company, Wingz Capital Pte Ltd. In this capacity, he has completed a few assignments in Beijing, Shanghai, Ho Chi Minh City, Chennai and Singapore. He started up SE Hub Ltd and was its Executive Director from 1 July 2011 to 30 September 2014. SE Hub was a social enterprise supported by the Singapore Tote Board that invested in other social enterprises and provided incubation and management support services to investees. SE Hub was incorporated into the Centre for Social Enterprise (raiSE) in May 2015. Lin Hong lectured on Venture Capital Financing in the MSc course on Technopreneurship and Innovation of the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore from 2015 to 2019.

 

Currently, Lin Hong is the Chairman of the Investment Panel of SEEDS Capital, the investment arm of Enterprise Singapore, and is a non-executive director of Insignia Ventures Partners Pte Ltd, a venture capital firm managing US$320 million in two funds.

He was previously a Managing Director in Temasek Capital (Pte) Ltd from October 2000 to March 2003. (Temasek Capital (Pte) Ltd was the private equity arm of Temasek Holding (www.temasekholdings.com.sg), a Singapore government-owned investment firm with a global portfolio of more than US$100 billion in 2007.) His responsibility was to set up Temasek's incubation program, which provided funding, support and mentoring services to start-ups and early stage companies. The program was successfully established in Singapore, Chennai and Shenzhen and several investments into start-ups were made in these cities.
